Why settle for tired, flaccid writing? The article body you’ve always wanted can be yours today. All you need to do is identify, unify and beautify. Three easy steps…amazing results!
Step 1 Identify – Use style and tone to identify yourself to your reader. Your writing style is the words you choose and the way you use them. It tells the reader who you are. You’re nice. You are accessible. You are funny, sarcastic, pedantic. Whoever you are, be yourself and let the reader know you through your style. Read your writing out loud. ring a bell? Should. That’s your style.
The tone of your article should identify who you are in relation to the reader and who you are in relation to the topic. You are an expert? Write with an authoritative tone. Are you a fan? Don’t try to sound like an expert. Your tone should be more familiar if you’re a friend or childhood friend than if you’re a curious observer or a gawker. Are you a satirist, humorist, alarmist, philanthropist? Hone your tone accordingly and you’ll be on your way to a damping body.
Step 2 Unify – A unified body is a polished body. Before you begin, decide what you want to achieve with your article, and write each line with that in mind. Deny diversions. Stay away from tempting tangents. Stay true to your topic, after all, you chose it, both for your sake and the reader’s. Think vertical. Cut out any passages that take you in a new direction; stick with those that take you deeper.
Step 3 Beautify – Polish the body of your garment with a basic beauty treatment. Take a good look at it. Does your body look good? Throw out the typos. Tear off the passive verbs. Fix misspelled words and replace misplaced punctuation. Do you have enough subheadings and are they in the right places? How long are your paragraphs? If they are too short, the reader may feel annoyed; too long and they may run out of breath.
Is your body full of jargon? Have you gorged yourself with graphics? Even the sharpest blade dulls from overuse, so be careful not to overdo it with your favorite writing techniques.
